GET TO KNOW NOEMI
Noemi Merz is a marine biologist and conservation storyteller with a deep dedication to marine conservation, particularly in shark conservation. Her academic journey spans five years of intensive study in marine biology, during which she delved into researching the trade of sharks and shark consumption. Her master’s degree project focused on the shark meat trade, with a specific spotlight on shark consumption in Sri Lanka and its importance to the domestic community.
In the scientific realm, Noemi discovered her passion and strength for conservation storytelling—a powerful tool for raising awareness and advocating for the preservation of marine life. Transitioning from academia to filmmaking, she embarked on a mission to document the threats facing sharks and other marine species. Through her lens, she not only sheds light on the challenges our oceans confront but also weaves narratives of hope by showcasing the success stories of conservation efforts.
Noemi started Visuals for Conservation as a passion project to amplify the work of marine conservation organizations through short films and photo stories. Her filmmaking journey began in Sri Lanka, capturing the urgency of overfishing’s impact on sharks. Since then, she has collaborated with inspiring organizations like Blue Resources Trust, Thresher Shark Indonesia, and Child Aid Papua, showcasing their efforts to protect marine ecosystems. Through Visuals for Conservation, she aims to inspire action, empower conservation initiatives, and contribute to safeguarding the ocean’s incredible biodiversity.
