THE BUBU FISHERS OF ALOR

Meet Paman Motong, a Bubu fisher of Alor.

The Bubu fishers of Alor Island in Indonesia are known for their unique fishing technique using traditional fish traps called ‘Bubu’. These traps are typically made from bamboo and rattan and are set in the ocean to catch various types of fish. Alor is among the very few places worldwide where this fishing method is used.

The Bubu fishers have a deep connection to the sea and rely on their traditional knowledge to sustain their livelihoods. They often pass down their fishing techniques and wisdom from generation to generation, preserving their cultural heritage.
