The Bubu Fishers of Alor

A portrait of Paman Motong and a fishing tradition unique to Alor.

Meet Paman Motong, a Bubu fisher of Alor.

The Bubu fishers of Alor Island in Indonesia are known for their unique technique using traditional fish traps called 'Bubu'. These traps are typically made from bamboo and rattan, and are set in the ocean to catch various species of fish. Alor is among the very few places worldwide where this method is still practiced.

The Bubu fishers have a deep connection to the sea and rely on traditional knowledge to sustain their livelihoods. They pass down their fishing techniques and wisdom from generation to generation, preserving their cultural heritage.
